For reasons of shortened construction times, durability, no painting nor pin holes and reduced maintenance costs the industry has been turning to composite panels as a viable product for interior finishes in areas where sustainable finishes are critical. There are a wide range of products available in this category and they serve a wide range of design requirements.

We have developed a line of composite panel options that at first glance looks confusing but is really very simple. They are driven by end user expectations for surface finish, finish details and function. There are two surface finishes to select from. One surface is a special ASTM Class A smooth face with no fiberglass print through and extra gel coat for high performance. The second surface is a standard FRP Class A rated gel coat that is smooth but fiberglass strands a visible through the surface. All faces are ASTM E 84 Class A.

There are two finish detail methods. One is technically seamless in which the panel edges are cut in a recessed ship lap pattern for joining and the resulting 3/16” wide seams or joint between the panels are sealed with a urethane sealant that is drawn flush with the surface. Once cured it presents a smooth, glossy sealed seam. The second finish method used square edge details on the panel in which the joints a butted together. An FRP batten is then applied over the seam and sealed to the surface with a silicone adhesive.

The function aspect deals with the end use application for the panel thickness. The panel thickness is the primary variant in this case and varies from a 7/16” thick composite panel to a FRP sheet with a re-may backer that totals 3/16” thick. Each option is available in both surface finishes. All panels are available in 4 x 8 and 4 x 10 sizes.



Panel Options  

Bio/CR-1:  

  • 7/16” thick panel with extra gel face, seamless finish with urethane sealant. High impact resistance
  • Mounts directly to studs or over drywall for fire hold out code
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • High gloss finish

Bio/CR-1B:

  • Same as Bio/CR-1 but with batten seam finish detail

Bio/CR-2:

  • ¼” thick panel with extra gel face, seamless finish with urethane sealant.
  • Good impact resistance
  • Mounts directly to studs or over drywall for fire hold out code
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • High gloss finish with no through print

Bio/CR-2B:

  • Same as Bio/CR-2 but with batten seam finish detail

Bio/CR-3:

  • 7/16” thick panel with standard gel face, seamless finish with urethane sealant.    
  • High impact resistance
  • Mounts directly to studs or over drywall for fire hold out code
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Gloss finish with through print

Bio/CR-3B:

  • Same as Bio/CR-3 but with batten seam finish detail

Bio/CR-4:

  • ¼” thick panel with standard gel face, seamless finish with urethane sealant.

  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Gloss finish with through print

Bio/CR-4B:

  • Same as Bio/CR-4 but with batten seam finish detail

Bio/CR-5B:

  • Foam core sandwiched between metal sheets and a standard gel face, batten finish, 5/8” thick.   
  • Good impact resistance
  • Mounts directly to studs or over drywall for fire hold out code
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Gloss finish with through print

Ultra Clean I:

  • 3/16” thick, composed of a .090 FRP panel with extra gel coat and a .120 re-may backing for stability and adhesive properties, batten finish detail.
  • Must be mounted on drywall or other substrate
  • Excellent impact resistance
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • High gloss finish.

Ultra Clean II:

  • 3/16” thick, composed of a .090 FRP panel with standard gel coat and a 120 mil re-may backing for stability and adhesive properties, batten finish detail.
  • Must be mounted on drywall or other substrate
  • Excellent impact resistance
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Gloss finish.

 

Considerations: If money is not an issue then the panel products Bio/CR-1 through Bio/CR-4B are applicable in any Vivarium or laboratory situation. If they are mounted over studs they greatly decrease installation time and coordination of trades. They are all moisture insensitive and highly chemical resistant. The life cycles are greatly improved and maintenance costs are greatly reduced. They function well in BSL-3 and 4 facilities as well as cage wash areas and spray down cubicles. All of the panel systems can also be used on the ceilings for hard lid designs.
